We’re looking for a Founding Backend Engineer to own the backend foundations behind orders, payouts, search, messaging, notifications, integrations, and marketplace workflows. This is a high-ownership, equity-first role for someone who wants to shape the architecture, engineering culture, and trust layer of an early but already released product. Initial compensation is 2–3% equity before fundraising, with the expectation to transition to salary + equity after a raise.

We're Lisa & Samira, founders of hey ema – a Swiss EdTech app for primary schools (grades kindergarten–6), aligned with Lehrplan 21 (the Swiss national primary school curriculum). We're piloting with five schools and currently founding our AG (Swiss corporation). Goal: national rollout by January 2027. hey ema is built by teachers, for teachers – iteratively, close to classroom reality, feature by feature. You are the technical bridge that turns our mission into a real product – together with David (Senior AI Engineer, ETH) and Konstantin (Digital Education Expert, PHSG). 🛠️ What you'll build – First production version of our web app – built to last, not patched together – Multi-tenant architecture with clean data separation across schools, classes and user roles – Role-based access control (RBAC) – compliant with Swiss nDSG and GDPR from day one – Swiss hosting (e.g. Exoscale, Nine, Switch) – data stays in Switzerland – CI/CD pipeline, structured Git workflow, automated testing – API design with interfaces for LLM-based AI features 💻 Stack Deliberately open – we'd love a well-reasoned proposal from you.
