Firmware / IoT Engineer (Part-time ~20%) — Zürich
Firmware / IoT Engineer
Company: E.Ride GmbH | Location: Zürich (office near Hardbrücke), on-site | Type: Part-time, 1 day per week (20%/8h) | Level: Junior to mid-level | Website: www.eride.africa | Compensation: CHF 700/month for 20% About us E.Ride is a young Zürich-based company building battery packs and electric motorcycles for emerging economies, with a focus on East Africa. We work at the intersection of renewable energy, e-mobility, and IoT, and our projects are built to have real-world impact in the markets we serve. We are a small, international team, and we run at startup pace: hands-on, fast-moving, and occasionally a little chaotic in the best way. We are looking for a firmware and IoT engineer to take over and grow the embedded and connected-systems work on our vehicles and battery packs. What you will do • Develop and maintain embedded firmware for our battery packs, battery management, and vehicle electronics, primarily in C/C++ on microcontroller platforms such as ESP32 and Arduino. • Improve and maintain our IoT telemetry pipeline: collecting data from vehicles and batteries in the field, transmitting it, storing it (InfluxDB), and visualising it in dashboards (Grafana). • Prototype, test, and debug on real hardware, including ESP32 and Raspberry Pi setups. • Get hands-on with the hardware itself: soldering, wiring, assembling and modifying prototype boards and test rigs, and bringing up new hardware alongside the firmware that runs on it. • Work with the communication interfaces used across our systems (for example UART, and where relevant CAN, I2C, or SPI). • Support the connection between our hardware and our backend and cloud systems. • Help us understand how deployed units are performing in the field and contribute to remote diagnostics and improvements. • Document your work and share knowledge within a small team. • 3D printing of prototypes. What you bring — Required • Ongoing or completed studies in electrical or electronic engineering, computer engineering, mechatronics, computer science, or a related field. • Hands-on experience with microcontrollers such as ESP32 or Arduino. • Comfort working directly with hardware: basic soldering, wiring, and assembling or reworking prototype boards. If your soldering is rusty, that is something you can sharpen with us. • Some programming experience, ideally in C or C++. • A self-directed, curious mindset: the willingness to try, fail, and try again is more important to us than a long list of credentials. • Independent! You need to set your own goals, get materials — you won’t be micromanaged. • English (spoken and written); German is a plus. Nice to have (you can also learn these with us) • Familiarity with embedded development tools such as PlatformIO. • Experience with time-series data tools like InfluxDB and Grafana. • Exposure to communication protocols such as UART, CAN, I2C, or SPI. • Version control with Git. • Some understanding of battery systems or battery management. • Basic backend or cloud concepts (for example MQTT or REST APIs). • A genuine interest in e-mobility, renewable energy, and emerging markets. Motivation and willingness to learn matter more to us than prior experience. If you have not touched some of the tools above but you are keen to pick them up, that is fine. What we offer • A part-time role of roughly one day per week (20%), with flexible working hours you largely arrange yourself. • Compensation of CHF 700 per month for a 20% position. • A young, international team and real experience in a startup environment. • Purpose-driven projects and a central location in Zürich. • The option, if you are interested, to travel and work from our office in Zambia during semester breaks or for a longer internship. We can arrange that. How to apply Send us a short CV and a few sentences about why this role interests you to [email protected]. We will get back to you. If you have any questions before applying, just reach out.
