R&D Engineer - Electrochemistry/Materials MEMBRASENZ GmbH Lausanne, Switzerland www.membrasenz.com Date: 11.10.2021 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full or part time, fixed term position as an “R&D Engineer - Electrochemistry/Materials” at MEMBRASENZ GmbH Lausanne, Switzerland. The position is funded by the H2020 programme (Grant Agreement 862453 FlowPhotoChem) and is available from 1st November 2021 or as soon thereafter for the initial period of 18 months. The Project FlowPhotoChem aims to develop and model an integrated modular system based on continuous-flow heterogeneous photo(electro)catalytic reactors to produce relevant chemicals such as ethylene in the chemical sector, precursor to ""green plastics"" and many other high-value chemicals using abundant renewable resources such as water, carbon dioxide and light. FlowPhotoChem will use the expertise of the partners to design, model, construct and validate an energy efficient integrated modular system with negative CO2 emissions, since concentrated CO2 will be valorised to high-value chemicals. Job Description The successful candidate will work on the development of anion exchange membrane materials for electrolysers (hydrogen production) and CO reduction reactors via polymer synthesis and additive manufacturing routes. Membrane electrochemical ex- and in-situ characterization will be undertaken to assess performance and stability thereof. Attempts towards membrane production upscale will follow the laboratory prototype preparation. Duties - Preparation of membrane materials for testing in-house and at collaborators premises. - Designing/upgrading/operating the electrochemical test set up (lab scale electrolysis). - Organize and mediate project partners/collaborators meetings. - Write periodic progress reports. - Keep appropriate records as directed and in line with company policy. - Contribute to the project’s dissemination (presentations, pitching, report, papers etc). Qualifications/Skills required The ideal candidate should have a strong background in electrochemistry, materials science/engineering, polymers and nanoparticles. Candidate should have excellent organizational skills, be highly motivated and passionate about hydrogen as a future energy carrier and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills. The position requires communication with the different partners of the consortium and collaborators, thus excellent communication skills are mandatory. - MSc or PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or similar - Industrial experience - Experience in working in a team - Evidence of experience in using electrochemical techniques (projects, publications etc.) - Evidence of experience in participation in polymer materials development (projects, publications etc.) - Experience in nanoparticles synthesis and characterisation - Demonstrable experience in both independent and collaborative research - English language - excellent verbal and written communication skills, in addition German or French language may be an advantage - Evidence of publication and dissemination of results at conferences - Innovative thinking, able to work both independently and in cross-disciplinary teams - Appropriate supervisory experience may be an advantage Start date: Position is available from November 2021.
